March 30th, 2010, marks the 152nd anniversary of the modern pencil.

In commemoration of the first patent of this writing tool we tend to take for granted, Pencil Day reminds us of the man who was issued a patent for a pencil with an eraser in the year 1858.

I wonder if Hymen Lipman ever thought about just how vital and widespread such an inconspicuous writing tool as the pencil would be.

While some libraries and schools pass out free pencils on this particular day, here are some great gift ideas for Pencil Day that will be right on point.

* Pencil Vase/Caddy Holder.

This unique pencil shaped container is perfect for teachers/teacher's aids of any grade level.

Made of hand-painted poly-resin, this unique container is adorned with a plaid ribbon, and has a cute apple with "A + Teacher" message painted on it.

It's perfect for holding pencils, pens, or markers in easy reach of the teacher.

* Pencil Planter.

In addition to the pencil vase caddy holder, you can also gift the teacher a pencil shaped planter as well.

Made of the same materials as the former gift item, the pencil shaped planter is adorned with a plaid ribbon, and is perfect for holding a small plant on your favorite teachers/teacher's aid's desk.

* Cool Pencil Case Holders.

What's a set of pencils without a pencil case holder? Instead of your everyday case holders, why not opt for something out of the ordinary such as:

  1. Recycled Plastic Eco Pencil Case.
  2. Webkinz Deluxe Pencil Case.
  3. Copper Plated Pencil Case.
  4. Vaultz Pencil Box - With A Ruby Bling Skull.
  5. Character Inspired Pencils Boxes (i.e. Spiderman, High School Musical, Pokemon, DC Heroes Superman)

* Unique Pencil Holders.

A really cool gift idea for Pencil Day, would be a unique, out-of-the-ordinary pencil holder.

Instead of your traditional pencil holders, these heavy cast iron pencil holders come in the shape of animals, and are hand-painted.

There's even a metal pencil/pen/memo desk set holder that's perfect for home or business offices that will surely thrill any who passes it.

* Unique Pencil Sharpeners.

What a great way to make sharpening pencils so much fun.

Although there are a bevy of choices available, the Magnetic Ladybug Calculator/Pencil Sharpener/Photo Frame combo, and the Robot pencil sharpener are two of my favorites.

In addition to being charming, they combine usefulness with desk accessorizing.

* Colorful Pencils.

We can't talk about Pencil Day without mentioning what started it all - the pencil. Instead of the traditional pencil, why not gift them something colorful, unique, and bright.

Raymond Geddes has a great series of colorful pencils that include:

  • Spring Blossoms
  • Incentive Pencils
  • Dr. Seuss Inspired Pencils (some with Giant Erasers)

In addition to the Raymond Geddes series, there are pencils that contain delicious gourmet smells, assorted colors, as well as pencils that are personalized with names or companies.

Whatever gift idea you choose for Pencil Day, you should be able to find something suitable from these ideas that would please any age group.

Happy Gifting!

So great to have a pencil day. The joke going around it that the US spent million$ to create the pen that writes upside down in outer space, while the Russians saved million$...by using a pencil.

Fun hub! Thanks!
